One of the most significant social phenomena during the critical days of the coronavirus outbreak in Iran is the rebellion and the escape of prisoners in various Iranian cities.
Over the past ten days, prisoners in at least nine cities in Iran, including Khorramabad, Aligodarz, Tabriz, Saqqez, Hamedan, Mahabad, Ahvaz, Tehran and Shiraz, rebelled.
In recent weeks, while the Iranian regime has adopted a policy of silence, several inmates have been infected with the coronavirus and some have died.
On March 12, 2020, the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) announced that reports from various Iranian regime prisons indicate that the coronavirus has spread to various prisons, including Tehran (Fashafouyeh) prison, Evin prison , Gohardasht Prison, Karaj Central Prison, Hassel Quezel Prison, Orumieh Prison, Shiban Prison in Ahvaz and and Kashan Prison. Political prisoner Amir Hossein Moradi, who was arrested during the November 2019 uprising and sentenced to death for participating in the protests, was among those affected by the virus.
On the same day, Ms Maryam Rajavi, President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), once again warned about the outbreak of the coronavirus in Iran's prisons and asked the UN Security Council, the Secretary-General, the Human Rights Council and the High Commissioner for Human Rights to condemn the clerical regime for its continued criminal cover-up of the spread of the coronavirus and for endangering the lives of people in Iran and other countries.
“The clerical regimes failure to release prisoners, esp. political prisoners, in the present conditions in Iran is tantamount to a major crime against humanity, and Khamenei and other regime leaders must be held accountable for it. It is an imperative for the UN Secretary General, the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the UN HumanRights Council, as well as the EU and its member states to take urgent action to save the lives of the prisoners in Iran,” Twitted Maryam Rajavi, who is also the leader of MEK Iran.
On the eve of the Persian New Year, the regime claimed to have temporarily released tens of thousands of prisoners.
As the news portal of MEK Iran informs, riots in prisons in various cities across the country in recent days have undermined the regime's claims and indicated that the claim was a deceptive act and that prisoners, especially political prisoners, are still in prisons in extremely dangerous conditions.
In most cases, dozens of inmates were successfully released from prison, indicating that escaped inmates enjoy wide support and assistance.
In this regard, the regime's prosecutor in Kurdistan province threatened to prosecute "those involved in hiding or providing aid to the collective escapes." Furthermore, the prisoners appear to be assisted by prison guards. State news agencies reported that four Saqqez prison guards were arrested for this.
As the MEK Iran news portal further informs, the continuation of prison escapes and rebellions despite the increased willingness and mobilization of the regime after the first cases, shows that the regime's system of control and administration in prisons has been shaken.
The regime's loss of control in prisons demonstrates the depth of its instability and despair in controlling Iran's explosive society, which is housed in a larger de facto prison. The factors that forced prisoners to risk their lives and confront the armed forces are the same for ordinary people. These factors, including maximum economic pressure and oppression along with the deadly coronavirus, spread by the mullah regime, have made the situation in Iranian society explosive.
It is this factor that has deeply angered the regime. In this regard, however, the regime's supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, on the pretext of combating the coronavirus, officially appointed his chief of staff to establish a military and security base. This base, which has assumed part of the government's duties under its control, is, in fact, a military government to control the situation and face possible uprisings.
As it was stated on the MEK Iran’s news portal (follow them on Twitter), regime officials have clearly understood that such a situation has brought his entire regime to the brink of overthrow. For this reason, amid the coronavirus outbreak that has devastated the lives of the Iranian people, the regime's president, Hasan Rouhani, and other officials blatantly say that they have no shortage of medicines or preventive equipment, such as masks or hospital facilities to combat the coronavirus, and they even claim that 10,000 hospital beds are empty.
On the other hand, in its propaganda campaigns abroad, the regime argues that the reason for the increasing number of deaths from coronavirus is the shortage of drugs and medical equipment due to sanctions by the United States. As such, the regime is trying to use the coronavirus as an "opportunity" to lift the sanctions.
This precisely means that the regime is using its old method of taking hostages, this time against the Iranian people and massacring them to compel the other party to grant them concessions.
Apparently, what has not been considered in this sinister and criminal plot and this unthinkable atrocity is what the Iranian people want. The Iranian Resistance Unit point out that what the Iranian people want has been made very clear by the multiple expressions of anger it has shown.
